Coremed, Inc., Announces Major Breakthrough In
Development Of Alvair™, Pulmonary-delivered Insulin, Based On Animal
Study
Lake Bluff, Nov 6th, 2003 / PRNewswire / -- Coremed, Inc., has
announced the successful development of Alvair™, a
pulmonary-delivered insulin formulation that is based on an animal
study. It termed the results efficacious and clean - with "no
residue."
Ever since 1994, Coremed, Inc., has been exclusively dedicated to
the development of oral insulin. The results of its intensive
pre-clinical biological trials of oral insulin have been presented
around the world.
Coremed's preliminary animal data were announced by Frank K.
Leung, M.D., F.A.C.E., a Harvard-trained endocrinologist and
researcher, who is director of Coremed's laboratory.
Dr. Leung said the preliminary data show that Alvair™ has equal
efficacy as subcutaneous insulin injection. Marked efficacy was
achieved as low as 0.1 u/kg. doses with sustained steady action over
many hours. The data variations were minimal and its glucodynamic
profiles were uniform.
Alvair™'s insulin bioavailability is the highest of any current
reported literature.
The lungs are exquisitely sensitive to particles, whether they
are inert or biologically inactive. Any residues, including insulin
itself, can be potentially harmful to the lungs. The current leading
inhaled insulin technology is approximately one tenth of the
efficacy of injection. Its glucose-lowering action is relatively
short-lived.
Alvair™ is an extremely efficient formulation requiring very low
insulin concentration in the order of sub-units, compared to the
requirement of 250-500 units/ml. concentration in some of the
leading inhaled insulin formulations, Dr. Leung said.
"Although we are a late comer in this area, our technology is
really far ahead of the current leaders," he said. "However, we
still have more work to do."
The major advantages of Alvair™'s efficacy, "cleaniness,"
glucodynamic profiles and extremely low manufacturing costs will
enable a pharmaceutical company to develop a leading product without
significant investment in sophisticated insulin manufacturing and
biological facilities, Dr. Leung added.
