Coremed, Inc., Announces Breakthrough in its Development of Intesulin™, Oral Insulin, Based on Animal Food-Intake Data

LAKE BLUFF, Ill., Aug. 25 / PRNewswire / -- Based on its evaluation of animal data, Coremed, Inc., announced that its Intesulin™ oral insulin showed "significant glucose lowering efficacy" when administered with food. Coremed, Inc., is exclusively dedicated to the development of oral insulin, a goal of scientists ever since insulin was discovered 80 years ago. Since 1994, Coremed has conducted some of the most intensive pre-clinical biological trials of oral insulin anywhere, resulting in its published data presented in the American Diabetes Association and the Endocrine Society's annual meetings from 2000 to 2003. From this research, its orally delivered insulin, Intesulin™, is now gaining global attention.

The latest announcement about Intesulin was made by Frank K. Leung, M.D. F.A.C.E., a Harvard-trained endocrinologist and researcher, who is director of Coremed's laboratory.

"The stomach is a very harsh environment where protein such as insulin is usually and quickly denatured," Dr. Leung said. "Other oral insulin technologies have been shown to be ineffective in the presence of food as well. Results of recent biological data from the research of Intesulin™ delivered intragastrically at 1-2 units/kg dose with gavage method." Additionally, Dr. Leung announced that Intesulin™:

Shows significant glucose lowering efficacy when administered with food intake in diabetic rats.

  • Is significantly more effective in diabetic than non-diabetic conditions.
  • Shows sustained hypoglycemic action over eight hours.
  • Controls blood glucose at a very predictable fashion and steady state.
  • Is much less likely to induce hypoglycemia as Aspar injection.
  • Delivered by gavage method can achieve similar level of glucose control as Aspar injection over time, although Aspar injection has quicker onset of action.

"We are very pleased with the progress of our development," Leung said. Major pharmaceutical companies around the world are in various stages of evaluating Coremed's oral insulin technology.
